Keep your gun in great condition

If the only time you turn to a gunsmith is when your gun breaks, then you are missing out.

EH Gunsmiths, our resident gunsmith and stocker, offer a range of gun services to keep your shotgun in optimal working order and safe to use, including proof checking, servicing, repairs, and stockwork and metal refinishing.

Our gunsmith is also skilled in the art of gun fit: we analyse stance and mount to ensure correct use and adapt your gun to fit you, helping you be a more accurate shot.

Few shooting schools, clubs or even gun shops have a resident gunsmith with the expertise to work with you on gun fit, which we regard as an essential aspect of shooting. Indeed, this service is usually available only to customers of bespoke gun makers.

Our Gun Services

Gun fitting service

Your gun should fit not fight or bite you

Gun fit helps to eliminate problems caused when you physically compensate for poor gun fit, a common problem even for experienced shooters.

Signs your gun does not fit include too many missed targets, feeling uncomfortable or getting bruised when shooting and even feeling nervous about handling the gun.

A gun fit session identifies dominant eye and assesses stance and mount technique. We also assess the length, cast and shape of stock and many other tiny measurements and alterations that make the difference between a gun that fits and one that fights you.

The gunsmith uses those measurements to adapt your gun, shortening or lengthening the stock or raising or lowering the comb for example.

Proof check

Check your gun is in proof and safe to use

There is a world of difference between a gun with a proof mark and a gun that is in proof.

Proof marks are added to the barrels to show the gun meets the standards required by law, rather like an MOT certificate for a car. But unlike an MOT, which shows a car is safe to use now, a proof mark shows only the shotgun was safe when the proof mark was added.

To check you gun is in proof, our gunsmith examines the barrels, checking bore size, wall thickness and barrel integrity and checks the gun closes tightly and safely. A gun that fails to meet these standards is dangerous.

It is illegal to sell a gun that is out of proof. Registered gun dealers are required to check that a gun is in proof before sale but many shotguns change hands in a private sale so this an essential check when buying or selling a gun privately.

Gun servicing

Keep your shotgun in working order and prevent rust

Regular servicing is the best way to make sure your gun is in good condition, safe and holding its value.

How often your shotgun needs servicing depends on how much you use it and if it is used in the wet.

Moisture is the enemy and can cause rust on all metal work. It can be caused by use in the rain and condensation, for instance if you bring a gun in from a cold to a warm environment.

Even if you clean your gun regularly, dirt and rust can build up inside the mechanism that you won’t be able to see.

When your shotgun is serviced, our gun smith will check proof and barrel condition and the gun stripped down and cleaned.

Gun repairs

Don’t suffer or ditch a badly behaving shotgun

If you shoot you will at some point experience problems with your shotgun.

The most common faults of any type of shotgun are mis-fire, failure to eject the cartridge and the additional damage caused by owners attempting to fix the problem themselves!

These problems won’t go away. They will in all likelihood get worse until the gun is unusable so the sooner you have your gun checked by a professional the better.

When have a problem with your shotgun, our gunsmith will assess, quote and repair it for you so just ask.

Shotgun Stock work

Making sure your stock looks good and feels good

Unless you are lucky enough to have a shotgun custom built for you, your shotgun’s stock will need modification to fit you.

Our gun smith will make the required alterations, identified by gun fit, to make the stock more comfortable for you to use and help you be a more accurate shot.

Should you find that your shotgun needs attention to deal with cracks, scuffed finish and wear to the stock and chequering, then it’s time to consult the gunsmith.
